Adoption Support in Cochrane
Explore whether adoption could be right for you
If you’re pregnant and considering adoption, you may have questions about what the process involves, how much say you have, and what it could mean for you and your child.
At Cochrane Pregnancy Care Centre, you can learn more about adoption, explore your feelings and concerns, and receive emotional support as you weigh your options. There’s no pressure to make a certain choice, and we’ll be there for you no matter what you decide.
Thinking About Adoption?
There are many reasons why someone might consider this path
Choosing whether to become a parent or place a child for adoption is a deeply personal decision. You may be thinking about your current circumstances, your plans for the future, and the kind of life you want for your child.
We offer a safe, confidential space to discuss these questions and clarify your options.
You might also be asking yourself:
Am I ready to become a parent?
How would parenting affect my education, career, finances, or other plans?
What kind of support would I have if I chose to parent?
How does the adoption process in Alberta work?
Can I choose the adoptive family?
Would I be able to have a relationship with my child after the adoption?
What happens if I change my mind?
Understanding Your Adoption Options
Learn more about what adoption can look like
Adoption does not look the same for every family. Depending on the adoption arrangement, there may be different levels of contact between birth parents, adoptive parents, and the child.
Learning about the different types of adoption and the decisions involved can give you a clearer picture of what you want for yourself and your baby.
When you visit Cochrane Pregnancy Care Centre, you’ll meet privately with a trained Client Advocate who can provide information about adoption and support you during the decision-making process. If you choose to explore adoption further, we can also connect you with the appropriate resources and referrals.
Your Decision is Your Own
Consider your choices at your own pace
You might be hearing different opinions from a partner, family members, friends, or others in your life. Our role isn’t to tell you what to do. It is your pregnancy, and learning about adoption does not commit you to pursuing it.
Instead, your Client Advocate will help you sort through your feelings, circumstances, priorities, and concerns; answer your questions; and provide factual information. You’ll have the time and space to make an informed decision without judgement or pressure. Whatever you ultimately decide, you’ll continue to be treated with care and respect.

FAQs
Common questions about adoption options
-
There isn’t one set of criteria that determines whether adoption is right for you. Consider your feelings about parenting, your current circumstances, your future plans, the resources available to you, and what matters most to you and your child. Learning about your adoption options can help you decide whether you want to explore it further.
-
“Giving a baby up for adoption” is a phrase people sometimes use, but you may also hear the process described as “placing a child for adoption” or “making an adoption plan.” The truth is that adoption is not “giving up.” It’s a carefully considered choice that birth parents make with their child’s future and well-being in mind.
-
That depends on the type of adoption. If choosing the adoptive family matters to you, a Client Advocate can help you identify the questions to ask and connect you with the right adoption resources to learn more about the process.
-
Adoption arrangements can involve different levels of contact. Because the specifics depend on the individual adoption arrangement and applicable requirements, an adoption professional can explain what may be available and help you understand your choices.
-
You can meet privately with a trained Client Advocate who will listen to your feelings and concerns, provide general information about adoption, and offer care and emotional support during the decision-making process. If you choose to pursue your adoption options further, we can also provide referrals and help you access the resources you need. Our adoption support is free and confidential.
-
Cochrane Pregnancy Care Centre provides free education, support, resources, and referrals rather than arranging adoptions. If you decide you want to pursue adoption, we’ll connect you with the appropriate professionals for the next steps. Of course, we’ll be here to walk alongside you for as long as you need us.
-
Absolutely. You don’t need to have a decision made before reaching out, and learning about your adoption options doesn’t mean you’re committed to that path. A Client Advocate can meet with you while you’re still exploring your choices, provide educational resources, and give you space to talk through what you’re thinking and feeling.
